When the narrator inherits her estranged father's cattle ranch in Hartsville, Texas, she discovers his will requires her to live on and actively manage the property for a year before accessing the inheritance money. A city dweller who left town at age six, she returns to the small community of one thousand people to secure funds for her company. The ranch's foreman, Cash Rivers, opposes her presence and wants her gone. Despite their immediate conflict, the narrator needs his expertise to learn ranch operations. As they work together, their antagonism shifts through late-night conversations and time spent at the local bar. She begins to develop feelings for him and finds herself drawn to life on the ranch.
