About this book

Casino tells the true story behind the Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Nicholas Pileggi focuses on Chicago bookie Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and his partner Anthony Spilotro, drawing on extensive interviews to reveal how the two oversaw Las Vegas casino operations for organized crime. The book details how Teamster pension funds were used to gain control of the Stardust and Tropicana casinos, and how Spilotro ran a crew of jewel thieves known as the "Hole in the Wall Gang." For years, these men skimmed millions in cash from the casinos for their bosses. The operation began to unravel when Rosenthal's ambitions led him to make critical mistakes. Spilotro's involvement with Geri, a showgirl and Rosenthal's wife, created further conflict. These events triggered betrayal, an FBI investigation, multiple convictions, and ultimately ended the Mafia's control of Las Vegas's gaming industry. Set in 1970s Las Vegas, the book chronicles a story involving adultery, murder, infighting, and revenge.
