Mexican Gothic

Set in glamorous 1950s Mexico, this novel follows Noemí Taboada, a debutante who travels to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, after receiving a desperate letter from her newly married cousin. Noemí arrives to find her cousin's English husband is a stranger, and she knows little about the region or the family. Despite her background in cocktail parties rather than investigation, Noemí is tough, smart, and unafraid. She begins to uncover the dark secrets of High Place and its inhabitants: her cousin's husband, who is both menacing and alluring; his father, an ancient patriarch fascinated by Noemí; and the family's youngest son, who may want to help her but harbors knowledge of the family's violent and troubled past. As Noemí investigates the house's faded mining wealth and the stories of madness within its walls, she experiences disturbing visions and finds herself drawn deeper into the family's mysteries, unsure if she can ever leave.
