Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to memoirs that centre on private moments with public figures, especially those that humanise icons rather than mythologise them.
  • You loved reading about 1980s and 90s New York culture, prep school worlds, and the specific texture of upper-class American life in that era.
  • You appreciate lyrical, emotionally precise writing that captures what first love actually felt like, including its transformative and sometimes painful dimensions.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for tell-all scandal or explosive revelations about JFK Jr.'s death or his family drama.
  • You prefer plot-driven narratives over introspective reflection on love, loss, and memory.
  • You're uncomfortable with memoirs that centre on the author's own emotional experience rather than external events.

About this book

Christina Haag grew up on Manhattan's Upper East Side alongside John F. Kennedy, Jr., who was part of her prep school circle. A decade after both graduated from Brown University, they were cast together in an off-Broadway play, where John revealed a long-standing crush on her. What followed was a five-year love affair that was both public and intimate, transformative for them both. Haag's memoir recounts this relationship through carefully crafted prose. The book serves as a reflection on first love, a particular era of New York, and a portrait of a young man characterized by tenderness, an adventurous spirit, and grace.
