A historical novel set in April 1860 in the Estado Oriental del Uruguay. Four key events unfold: the new government develops a law project for national holiday celebrations; Diego Carpintero, a skilled gaucho and horseman, receives an envelope sent from Paraguay by Juan Simeón Artigas; the Cavaleiros Gaúchos conspire to annex the Estado Oriental to the Brazilian Empire; and the novel Por una fortuna, una cruz is published, exposing the living conditions of women. The narrative raises central questions: What does the envelope contain? Is the Estado Oriental fragile enough to disappear? Why is August 25, 1825 proposed for celebration when this date was excluded from the 1834 law? Fictional characters and historical figures of Uruguayan history—including Acuña de Figueroa, Berro, Varela, the Baron of Mauá, Ansina, and Artigas—intersect in this historical novel. Through rapid action and reflection on national identity, the story poses a troubling question: is it possible to build a small nation surrounded by great powers where "the most unhappy will be the most privileged"?
