Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to memoirs that weave cultural identity with personal loss and find healing in unexpected places like cooking.
  • You appreciate lyrical, honest writing that doesn't shy away from complicated family relationships or the messy work of growing up between worlds.
  • You follow Japanese Breakfast's music and want to understand the person behind the art, or you're curious about Asian American experiences that centre food and family.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear resolutions. This is introspective and cyclical, moving between timelines and emotional states rather than building toward a climax.
  • You're looking for a step-by-step guide to grief or healing. Zauner's memoir is personal testimony, not instruction.
  • You want distance from cancer narratives. Her mother's illness is central to the book's emotional core.

About this book

Michelle Zauner, known as the indie rock musician Japanese Breakfast, presents a memoir about family, food, grief, and her experience growing up Korean American. The book chronicles her childhood as one of few Asian American students in Eugene, Oregon; her complicated relationship with her mother's high expectations; and formative time spent in her grandmother's apartment in Seoul, bonding over meals late into the night. As Zauner moved to the East Coast for college, worked in restaurants, and performed with her band, her connection to her Korean heritage grew distant. When her mother received a terminal cancer diagnosis at Zauner's age twenty-five, it prompted her to reclaim the cultural gifts—taste, language, and history—her mother had shared with her. The memoir includes family photographs and combines lyrical, honest storytelling with intimate anecdotes.
