Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy fast-paced fantasy with clever protagonists who'd rather scheme their way out of trouble than fight their way through it.
  • You like your Fae courts political and dangerous, with a protagonist who operates in the grey rather than choosing obvious sides.
  • You want adventure with real stakes where a single piece of cargo could reshape the balance between human and Faerie realms.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer romance as the central plot; Alanis's story is about survival and outsmarting enemies, not falling in love.
  • You want standalone stories; this is the first in a series and ends with threads deliberately left for the next book.
  • You need a straightforward hero with clear morals; Alanis is a smuggler and occasional pirate who operates in moral grey zones.

About this book

In 1680, Charles II kidnapped a Sidhe princess. Her father responded by sending armies rather than diplomats, and the Fae breached the Veil, destroyed cities, and altered history. Centuries later, Humans and Fae coexist uneasily in the Mortal Realm, and England never regained its former power. Alanis Nightshade is a Winter Court Fairy who works as a smuggler and occasional pirate, preferring to avoid royal conflicts. She operates quietly, moving rare goods between worlds. When stranded in Edinburgh during a coup, she becomes entangled in the kind of trouble she typically avoids. A new Sidhe king has taken control of Scotland and seeks conquest. He wants Alanis's ship—a vessel capable of crossing the Veil and transporting an army into Faerie. Alanis must outthink, outrun, or defeat him, or both realms will face serious consequences.
