Perfect for you if...

  • You want a rigorous, unflinching account of Nazi atrocities told through multiple perspectives: German soldiers, French civilians, and British intelligence operatives.
  • You respect Hastings' work and are interested in how ordinary men became perpetrators of industrial-scale violence during wartime.
  • You're studying WWII's Eastern Front legacy and how elite Wehrmacht units behaved when confronted with resistance and disorder on the ground.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need a straightforward chronological battle narrative; this is a judicial examination of moral collapse under orders, not a tactical breakdown.
  • You want simplified moral clarity; Hastings refuses to demonise or excuse, which can feel unsettling if you prefer heroes and villains.
  • You're looking for a quick, uplifting read; this is a dense, disturbing book about specific atrocities and the complicity that enabled them.

About this book

In June 1944, Germany's 2nd SS Panzer Division, Das Reich, was repositioned from the Eastern Front to France to regroup and restock. When Allied forces landed in Normandy, the division was ordered northward to counter the invasion. During its march of 15,000 men, Das Reich committed major atrocities: the execution of 99 French civilians in Tulle on June 9 and the massacre of 642 in Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10. Max Hastings recounts these events through multiple perspectives—French resistance fighters, the British Secret Service (which coordinated resistance efforts), and German soldiers themselves. The narrative examines the moral dimensions of wartime mentality and the brutality that occurred during this month of the D-Day landings.
