About this book

Three Finnish siblings—Ilmari, Matti, and Aino Koski—leave their farm family for nineteenth-century America after their father's arrest by imperial Russian authorities. Drawn by the Homestead Act, the brothers sail to America while Aino, disillusioned after her Marxist cell is exposed, follows later. The siblings settle in a logging community in southern Washington near the Columbia River. Ilmari becomes the family's spiritual anchor, Matti establishes himself as a logger and entrepreneur, and Aino emerges as an independent woman and union activist devoted to her cause. The novel documents the logging industry and its transformation of the landscape, while examining the role of individuals and immigrants in a developing America.
