Perfect for you if...

  • You love science fiction that treats time travel as a serious intellectual problem, not just plot convenience.
  • You're drawn to historical fiction where the past feels lived-in and messy, full of ordinary people facing extraordinary horror.
  • You want a book that balances genuine humour and warmth with real darkness, without becoming cynical about human resilience.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots without digressions. Willis moves deliberately and spends time on character development over action.
  • You're looking for a romantic adventure. The time travel romance elements are peripheral to the larger story about survival and history.
  • You want to avoid graphic depictions of medieval plague, suffering, and mortality. The novel doesn't flinch from the reality of the fourteenth century.

About this book

Kivrin, a young researcher, prepares to travel back in time to study the fourteenth century, one of history's deadliest periods. She receives inoculations against period diseases and creates a cover story for a woman traveling alone. Her instructors in the twenty-first century conduct careful calculations and monitor the rendezvous point for her arrival. A crisis linking past and future strands Kivrin in the medieval era while her colleagues attempt a desperate rescue. In an age marked by superstition and fear, Kivrin becomes an unexpected source of hope during one of history's darkest times. The novel explores themes of evil, suffering, and human resilience.
