About this book

A small German town vanished centuries ago and was never resettled. Historian Tom and theoretical physicist Sharon investigate why Eifelheim should have survived by all logic, but didn't. In 1348, Father Dietrich serves as priest of Eifelheim as the Black Death approaches. An educated man, Dietrich becomes humanity's first contact with an alien race when their ship crashes in a nearby forest. The encounter unfolds during a time of wonders, shadowed by plague. The novel interweaves two timelines: the medieval village's encounter with extraterrestrial visitors and the modern investigators seeking to understand what happened. Tom, Sharon, and Father Dietrich's fates intersect across centuries in this science fiction novel that combines historical detail with speculative physics.
