Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to meticulously researched WWII narratives that focus on individual survival rather than broad military strategy.
  • You appreciate tightly plotted non-fiction where the tension doesn't end with the main crisis, but escalates through what comes after.
  • You've read Kershaw's previous books and want more of his ability to turn historical facts into page-turning narrative.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You struggle with detailed accounts of torture and brutal treatment of prisoners, as this book doesn't shy away from describing the "Torture Farm" interrogation camp.
  • You prefer uplifting survival stories with clear resolutions, rather than accounts that dwell on suffering and the long aftermath of trauma.
  • You want broad military history or naval tactics explained, rather than a deeply personal account focused on nine men's ordeal.

About this book

On October 24, 1944, the U.S. Navy submarine Tang was struck by one of its own faulty torpedoes in the early morning hours. The survivors found themselves trapped one hundred and eighty feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean while the Japanese dropped deadly depth charges. As air supplies dwindled, some crew members attempted a daring escape through the hatch. Of the original eighty-man crew, only nine survived the initial disaster. The survivors' ordeal was far from over. Captured by the Japanese, they were sent to an interrogation camp known as the "Torture Farm," where they endured torture and beatings. When liberated in 1945, they were near death but had revealed nothing to their captors, including a major secret of World War II. Alex Kershaw recounts this true story of survival and endurance during the submarine disaster and its aftermath.
