Perfect for you if...

  • You've lost someone and need to read about grief that doesn't pretend to have answers, just witness.
  • You admire Alexandra Fuller's raw honesty from her previous memoirs and want more of her unflinching voice.
  • You're searching for permission to fall apart whilst holding yourself together for the people who still need you.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer uplifting narratives that resolve neatly by the final page.
  • You want practical steps or coping mechanisms rather than the messy, interior experience of grief itself.
  • You're looking for a quick read. At 181 pages, this is dense with emotion and requires space to sit with it.

About this book

A Pulitzer Prize finalist memoir by Alexandra Fuller about grieving the sudden death of her twenty-one-year-old son, Fi, who died in his sleep in the summer of 2018. At the time, Fuller was approaching her fiftieth birthday and attempting to stabilize her life when the loss occurred. No stranger to loss—having experienced the deaths of young siblings, a parent, and displacement from her home country of Zimbabwe—Fuller finds herself devastated. Aware that she cannot abandon her two surviving daughters, she embarks on a journey through the Rocky Mountains, traveling from a sheep wagon in Wyoming to a silent meditation retreat in Alberta, Canada, as she attempts to process her grief. Fuller is also the author of Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight. The book was selected as a Book of the Year by the New York Times, Washington Post, and Time.
