Perfect for you if...

  • You love cosy mysteries where the stakes feel personal and the detective genuinely cares about the community she's investigating.
  • You've read earlier Meg Langslow books and want more of her trademark blend of eccentric family chaos and actual detective work.
  • You appreciate mysteries that don't take themselves too seriously but still deliver a proper puzzle to solve.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need high-octane tension and dark subject matter. this series stays light and humorous even when dealing with murder.
  • You prefer standalone mysteries over series instalments. Book 37 assumes you know who these characters are and why they matter.
  • You want gritty procedural realism. Meg's investigations are more about talking to old-timers and digging through library records than forensics.

About this book

Meg Langslow supervises construction of a duck pond in her brother Rob's backyard when bulldozers uncover a skeleton with a bullet hole in its skull. Chief Burke begins searching police records for missing persons, and Meg offers to help by researching in the library and interviewing longtime residents. Meg's investigation becomes more urgent when Iris Rafferty, who sold the house to Rob and his wife Delaney and still lives in their mother-in-law suite, disappears the morning after the body is discovered. The circumstances of her disappearance remain unclear—whether voluntary, kidnapping, or something else. Prowlers are spotted lurking around the half-finished pond at night, raising questions about their intentions toward the missing woman or the dogs scheduled to participate in Caerphilly's first Mutt March, happening nearby at Meg's own house.
