Gods and Generals is a novel set during the American Civil War that follows the lives and careers of major military leaders in the conflict's early stages. The narrative centers on Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, a strict military instructor and devout Christian who becomes a commanding general; Winfield Scott Hancock, a quartermaster captain who rises to prominence in the Union army; Joshua Chamberlain, an academic who becomes a soldier; and Robert E. Lee, who does not initially believe civil war will occur. The novel examines the thoughts and motivations of those who fought in the war, depicting soldiers, battlefields, and the historical events that transformed the nation. This book serves as a prequel to The Killer Angels, a Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. The edition includes an excerpt from Blaze of Glory.
