About this book

Stanley Yelnats is under a curse that has followed his family for generations, beginning with his great-great-grandfather. Unjustly sent to Camp Green Lake, a boys' detention center, Stanley is forced to spend his days digging holes that are exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. The camp has no actual lake, only numerous holes. Stanley soon discovers that the digging serves a purpose beyond character building—the warden is searching for something buried beneath the dried-up lake bed. As Stanley attempts to uncover the truth, he becomes entangled in a story involving crime, punishment, and redemption. This special anniversary edition includes a new note from author Louis Sachar and an essay titled "Ten Things You May Not Know About HOLES" by Louis Sachar, along with additional bonus content. The book won the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award.
