About this book

Ghana, eighteenth century: two half sisters are born into different villages, unaware of each other's existence. One marries an Englishman and lives comfortably in the Cape Coast Castle. The other is captured in a village raid, imprisoned in the same castle, and sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants across eight generations, from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, through the American Civil War and into Jazz Age Harlem. The novel traces slavery's legacy for both those taken from Africa and those who remained, examining how the memory of captivity has shaped the nation's history.
