Two years after her fiancé's death in an accident, the protagonist receives news that his father has died suddenly, leaving Brad's adult brother Scottie without a caregiver. She agrees to move cross-country to New Hampshire to care for Scottie until he can be placed in a group home. Upon arrival, she discovers that Josh Mathers—her fiancé's best friend and her sworn enemy—has decided to help care for Scottie as well. Their mutual dislike stems from a text she accidentally read years ago. Despite their animosity, neither is willing to leave, as they both care deeply for Scottie. They end up living together in a small house with only one available bedroom. As time passes, the protagonist begins to see Josh differently than she expected. She finds herself developing feelings for someone she once considered an enemy, while both struggle with guilt over Brad and the tension of their forced proximity in a cabin in the woods.
