Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to unvarnished World War II accounts from soldiers who were actually there, not filtered through historians.
  • You're interested in Patton as a military leader and want to understand his character beyond the mythology.
  • You appreciate stories about ordinary Americans who witnessed extraordinary historical moments and built lives afterwards.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer polished, narrative-driven war stories over raw firsthand testimony.
  • You want detailed tactical analysis of military campaigns rather than a soldier's perspective on daily life and morale.
  • You're looking for a comprehensive history of the Third Army; this is one man's intimate experience, not a comprehensive account.

About this book

In December 1944, Frank Sisson deployed to Europe as part of General George S. Patton's Third Army. Over the next six months, he participated in major World War II events, including the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Dachau. Now 95 years old, Sisson shares his firsthand account of serving under Patton for the first time. Sisson grew up in rural Oklahoma during the Great Depression and lost his father young. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Army and was deployed to France in 1944. He witnessed Patton's erratic and short-tempered nature alongside his tactical brilliance and deep concern for his soldiers. This account describes life on the ground during the closing days of World War II. After the war, Sisson served as a military police inspector in Berlin before returning home to attend college and pursue a business career. Like many of his generation, he was reluctant to share his war experiences. Patton died in a car accident in December 1945, less than a year after the war's conclusion. Seventy-five years later, Sisson's reminiscences offer a direct perspective on Patton's leadership, the final stages of the war, and combat on the front lines.
