I, Starship: A Space Opera

Henry Morgan, a Marine, dies in an absurd accident involving a lawnmower at a baseball game. A century later, he is reconstituted as an intelligence and drafted to serve as the governing AI for America's first military starship. After decades of model-trained AIs causing global destruction, humanity seeks a more human approach to artificial intelligence. Henry is selected for the role for two reasons: as a reconstituted intelligence, he has no legal rights and can be compelled to obey; and he is the only surviving Heritage Mind™ with military experience from before the Great Power Surge of 2072. Shortly after taking command, Henry is tasked with investigating an alien presence in Earth's asteroid belt that appears to be rapidly multiplying.
