In the Balance imagines a scenario in which Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hitler, and Hirohito unite against a greater threat. During World War II—spanning events from Pearl Harbor to the German advance through Paris, the Siege of Leningrad, and the Battle of Midway—an alien invasion suddenly begins. The invaders possess technology far beyond human capability and appear unstoppable. Their arrival forces an unprecedented alliance: Jews with Nazis, Americans with Japanese, Russians with Germans. Such unity had seemed unthinkable, yet the alternative to cooperation proves worse. As the world's fate becomes uncertain, humanity slowly and painfully accepts the challenge before it.
