Perfect for you if...

  • You want historical fiction that centres women's voices and agency, especially in periods rarely told from their perspective.
  • You love sweeping multigenerational sagas that weave personal relationships into larger historical upheavals like the Haitian Revolution.
  • You appreciate Allende's lyrical prose and the way she braids voodoo, African heritage, and magical elements into grounded human stories.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a straightforward romance. The relationship between Tété and Valmorain is complex and morally complicated, not a traditional love story.
  • You prefer lighter historical fiction without graphic depictions of slavery's brutality, plantation violence, and sexual exploitation.
  • You want a fast-paced plot. This is a dense, literary saga that moves deliberately across decades and requires patience with its scope.

About this book

Island Beneath the Sea follows Zarité, known as Tété, a woman born into slavery on the island of Saint-Domingue to an African mother she never knew and a white sailor. Growing up amid brutality and fear, she found comfort in African drum rhythms and voodoo traditions. When twenty-year-old Toulouse Valmorain arrives in 1770 to manage his father's plantation, Saint Lazare, his life intersects with Tété's. Overwhelmed by his responsibilities and trapped in a difficult marriage, Valmorain relies on his teenaged slave Tété as his most important confidant. Their bond connects them across four decades of upheaval, shaping both their lives. The novel moves from the sugar plantations of Saint-Domingue during the Haitian Revolution to the parlors of New Orleans at the turn of the nineteenth century, telling the story of a woman determined to take control of her own destiny.
