About this book

Island of a Thousand Mirrors follows two families in Sri Lanka before and during the country's civil war. Yasodhara grows up in Colombo in a wealthy Sinhala family, where her childhood is shaped by social hierarchies, her parents' ambitions, and the subtle differences between Tamil and Sinhala communities. When war erupts, her family flees to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Saraswathie, a young Tamil girl living in the active war zone, dreams of becoming a teacher. Her aspirations are cut short when she is arrested by Sinhala soldiers and drawn directly into the conflict she has tried to avoid. The lives of these two girls become unexpectedly connected through the decades-long civil war. Narrated in two distinct voices, the novel spans the entirety of the conflict and explores themes of cultural heritage, family bonds, and the impact of war on a nation.
