Perfect for you if...

  • You love immersive historical fiction that takes its own world seriously, complete with appendices and scholarly asides that deepen the magic system.
  • You appreciate slow-burn character studies where the relationship between mentor and pupil fractures under the weight of ambition and competing philosophies.
  • You're drawn to baroque, intricate prose and don't mind books that demand attention across 800+ pages.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want rapid pacing and plot twists every chapter. This book moves deliberately and rewards patience, not speed.
  • You prefer contemporary settings or purely fantastical worlds. The meticulously researched Georgian and Napoleonic-era detail is central, not background.
  • You're put off by unreliable narrators and moral ambiguity. Both Strange and Norrell make questionable choices that complicate easy sympathy.

About this book

Set during the Napoleonic Wars in 1806, this novel follows two magicians who bring magic back to England. Mr. Norrell, a reclusive practitioner, reveals his magical abilities and becomes a public figure. Jonathan Strange, a young magician, emerges as another practicing magician and becomes Norrell's pupil. The two join forces to aid England in its war against France. As Strange progresses, he becomes increasingly drawn to dangerous and perilous forms of magic. His pursuit of these practices threatens his partnership with Norrell and puts at risk everything he values. The novel traces the relationship between the two magicians as they shift from teacher and pupil to rivals, ultimately changing the course of England's history.
