Jubilee tells the story of Vyry, a mixed-race child born to a white plantation owner and his black mistress in the Civil War-era South. Through Vyry's perspective, the novel depicts the antebellum South—its wealth and violence—as well as the devastation of war and the period of Reconstruction that followed. Margaret Walker drew on thirty years of research and her own family's oral history to create this novel. The work portrays the daily lives and experiences of enslaved people, incorporating details of their hunger, spirituality, and struggles. The book includes a foreword by Nikki Giovanni.
