Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to American history but want narrative momentum rather than textbook prose. You enjoy stories where the drama is real and the stakes genuinely changed the course of a nation. You're curious about the lesser-known details of famous historical events, like how Lafayette Baker tracked Booth or why Mary Surratt became the first woman executed by the U.S. government.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer academic histories with heavy source citations and historiographical debates rather than a propulsive narrative. You're tired of Bill O'Reilly's voice and perspective in general. You're looking for a deep psychological study of Booth's motivations rather than a fast-paced account of events.

About this book

Killing Lincoln recounts the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and its aftermath. In spring 1865, as the Civil War ends, President Lincoln offers generous surrender terms to Robert E. Lee, hoping to reunite the divided nation. However, John Wilkes Booth—a charismatic actor and racist—and his accomplices, possibly connected to high government officials, reject this path. Booth murders Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., sparking a nationwide manhunt. Lafayette C. Baker, a New York detective and former Union spy, pursues the investigation while federal forces track Booth's accomplices. The search culminates in a fiery shootout and subsequent court-ordered executions, including that of Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the U.S. government. The narrative features historical figures and details surrounding these events.
