Perfect for you if...

  • You love experimental fiction that refuses to look away from hard truths, told through fragments, plays, and conversations that feel jarringly alive.
  • You're drawn to stories about plague and survival, where the personal and political collide with dark humour.
  • You appreciate Lebanese voices in literature and want something that moves beyond Western narratives of these twin crises.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer linear plots with clear resolutions and traditional narrative structure.
  • You find graphic depictions of violence, death, and sexual content unsettling rather than necessary.
  • You're looking for hope-filled uplift. This book breaks hearts more often than it mends them.

About this book

Koolaids examines the impact of the AIDS epidemic in America and the Lebanese civil war in Beirut on a group of friends and their families during the 1980s and 1990s. The novel uses a fragmented structure, combining clips and quips, vignettes, hallucinations, news reports, short plays, and conversations with both living and dead characters to depict how people experience life amid chaos and loss. The narrative is nonlinear and often sexually frank or violent, merging into a portrait of two cultures experiencing internal upheaval. The work addresses themes of war, disease, sexual politics, and cultural identity through interconnected scenes that maintain cohesion despite their discontinuous form.
