Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in how ordinary people challenged state violence and won, even when the victory came at a devastating cost.
  • You want to understand Brazilian history beyond the usual narratives, told through the lives of Black men whose stories were nearly erased.
  • You read history to understand how nations build themselves on the backs of the dispossessed, and what resistance looks like.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a narrative that celebrates triumph without examining the brutal aftermath and personal toll on the rebels.
  • You prefer history that focuses on elite decision-makers rather than the experiences of working-class enlisted men.
  • You want a straightforward military or political history without deep engagement with race, violence, and power structures.

About this book

Legacy of the Lash examines the social and cultural history of the Brazilian navy in the decades before and after slavery's abolition in Brazil in 1888. The book focuses on non-elite, mostly black enlisted men and the oppressive labor systems they endured. At its center is the four-day Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash) in November 1910, when nearly half of Rio de Janeiro's enlisted men rebelled against corporal punishment in the navy. The rebels seized four new warships, aimed their guns at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's capital, and held the city's population hostage until the government abolished the lash as a form of military discipline. Though the revolt achieved its goal, those involved faced severe consequences. This event serves as a framework for exploring racial identity, violence, masculinity, citizenship, modernity, and the formation of the Brazilian nation.
