In 2116, citizens are required by law to end their lives at age twenty-one. A crystal flower embedded in each person's palm turns from red to black on their Lastday, signaling them to report to a Sleepshop for processing. However, the human instinct for survival often proves stronger than legal mandate. Logan 3 works as a Sandman, an enforcer tasked with pursuing Runners—those who refuse to accept Deep Sleep and attempt to escape. When Logan learns that his own palmflower will soon turn black, a Runner he encounters reveals the existence of Sanctuary, a place of refuge. Driven by this discovery, Logan abandons his role as enforcer and becomes a Runner himself, now hunted by those he once served. This novel inspired the 1970s science-fiction film starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Richard Jordan.
