Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books: When Banned Books Shake Up a Small Georgia Town—A Funny and Poignant Novel about Censorship, Friendship, and Unexpected Connections

In the small town of Troy, Georgia, Beverly Underwood and Lula Dean are longtime rivals. Beverly now serves on the school board, while Lula has become a local figure by campaigning to remove books she deems inappropriate from public libraries—despite never having read them. To promote what she considers suitable literature, Lula establishes a lending library in a wooden hutch outside her home. Unknown to Lula, a local troublemaker has replaced her collection with banned books: literary classics, gay romances, Black history texts, spell books, Judy Blume novels, and others. As townspeople borrow from Lula's library, their lives shift in unexpected ways. When one of Lula's adversaries discovers the swap and decides to retaliate, tensions escalate further—especially as Lula and Beverly both run to become the town's next mayor. As the library's secret borrowers begin to reveal themselves, a confrontation between the two rivals threatens to transform the entire community.
