Childhood friends Tris Enders and Juliet Branscombe were betrothed to each other from infancy. Growing up on neighboring estates in Derbyshire, however, made marriage to each other the last thing either wanted. Tris has fallen for a girl he met in London, while the handsome Lord Canfield has moved to a nearby estate and caught Juliet's attention.
