A murder and theft occur at Rudhall Manor: a box of jewels disappears and Lord Sedley, an elderly aristocrat, is stabbed six times in the chest. The Sedley family and servants suspect Miss Lucy Anne Trotter, a newly hired governess, of committing both crimes. When the legendary Marquis Lord William Adair learns of the incidents, he decides to investigate. Lucy, however, distrusts aristocrats regardless of their appearance, and instead pursues her own investigation accompanied by two pugs and a raven. Lucy's search for the killer becomes increasingly complicated. She encounters obstacles including difficult servants, unexpected physical peculiarities, tangled romantic entanglements, unruly chickens, and failed disguises. As complications mount, Lucy begins to question whether she has taken on more than she can handle.
