Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to historical fiction that centres overlooked women and gives them agency rather than victimhood.
  • You love medieval intrigue with real historical stakes: the Second Barons Revolt, court politics, and family loyalty tested under pressure.
  • You appreciate first-person narration that lets you inhabit a specific woman's mind across decades of her actual life.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your historical fiction to simplify politics into clear heroes and villains rather than navigating genuinely murky allegiances.
  • You want fast-paced plot-driven novels; this is a character study that moves at the pace of a medieval queen's careful observations.
  • You need a lot of romantic storyline; Eleanor's marriage is political and complicated, not a love story.

About this book

Eleanor of Provence was married to King Henry III as a young girl and faced a court filled with political intrigue and baronial conflict. As a devoted mother, she defied the monks to tend to her sick son, the future King Edward I. Her loyalty to family members earned her the jealousy of nobles and the anger of common people. As Simon de Montfort's influence grew and Henry's declined, Eleanor had to distinguish allies from enemies. She wondered whether her son Edward would rescue his captive father at Evesham and whether her own legacy would survive or be forgotten. Today, Eleanor of Provence remains largely unknown to history. She is one of the lesser-known English queens, and her gravesite has been lost—she is among the few English monarchs with no known tomb. MY FAIR LADY is a first-person novel told from Eleanor's perspective, offering a woman's account of her queenship, life, and relationships during the 13th century, at the time of the Second Barons Revolt.
