Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by the Civil War's pivotal moments and want the full tactical story beyond the famous battle itself.
  • You appreciate granular military history that reconstructs events from primary documents, letters, and eyewitness accounts.
  • You're interested in how commanders make decisions under extreme pressure, especially when armies are wounded and supplies are scarce.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven histories that feel like novels rather than detailed tactical reconstructions.
  • You're looking for a brief overview of Gettysburg. This focuses entirely on the ten days after, not the battle itself.
  • You want broad Civil War context. This zooms deep into specific engagements and cavalry movements, assuming existing knowledge.

About this book

One Continuous Fight is a detailed military history of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's retreat from the Battle of Gettysburg and Union General George G. Meade's pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia, July 4–14, 1863. After three days of fighting that produced 50,000 casualties, Lee faced the challenge of withdrawing his battered army across the Potomac River while far from supply bases. Meade's task was to intercept and destroy the retreating Confederates. Cavalry commander James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart was responsible for defending the exposed Southern columns during the retreat. The retreat involved nearly two dozen skirmishes and engagements at locations including Granite Hill, Monterey Pass, Hagerstown, Williamsport, Funkstown, Boonsboro, and Falling Waters. President Abraham Lincoln was pleased with the battlefield victory but disappointed that Meade could not surround and crush the Confederates before they crossed the Potomac on July 14. The study draws on documents, letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, and primary and secondary sources to describe each engagement. It includes 18 original maps, dozens of photographs, and a driving tour with GPS coordinates of the retreat route and the 17-mile wagon train of wounded.
