Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy historical mysteries where the detective is thoughtful and principled, not just clever.
  • You appreciate vivid medieval settings with genuine period detail that doesn't slow down the story.
  • You like tight plots where small clues (a broken flower, a girl in disguise) matter as much as the big picture.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need fast-paced action and visceral violence. This is a quiet investigation wrapped in a war story.
  • You prefer modern crime procedurals or psychological thrillers over historical whodunits.
  • You want romance as a main thread. The relationships here are secondary to the central mystery.

About this book

Brother Cadfael discovers a murder amid the wreckage of Shrewsbury Castle in this medieval mystery. In the summer of 1138, war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud draws Brother Cadfael from his garden into a world of conflict, deception, and death. When Shrewsbury Castle falls, its ninety-four defenders loyal to the empress are hanged as traitors. Brother Cadfael agrees to bury the dead but makes a disturbing discovery: one victim has been strangled rather than hanged. This unusual method of killing suggests the murderer is both intelligent and ruthless. Though one death seems insignificant among so many, Brother Cadfael is determined to uncover the truth. He pursues scattered clues—a girl dressed as a boy, missing treasure, and a single broken flower—believing these details will reveal the killer's identity.
