Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to stories about grief and healing that don't shy away from pain but ultimately offer hope.
  • You enjoy character-driven family dramas where relationships matter more than plot twists.
  • You appreciate Baldacci's ability to balance emotional depth with accessible, page-turning prose.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer mystery or thriller plots with high stakes and surprise revelations. This is domestic drama, not a puzzle to solve.
  • You want a light summer read. This deals seriously with terminal illness, death, and the aftermath of loss.
  • You're looking for a romance novel. The love story here is secondary to the family restoration at its heart.

About this book

One Summer is a family drama centered on Jack, a terminally ill man, and his family. As Christmas approaches, Jack prepares to say goodbye to his wife Lizzie and their three children. A car accident kills Lizzie unexpectedly, and with no one able to care for them, the children are separated and sent to live with different family members across the country. Against the odds, Jack recovers from his terminal illness. Determined to reunite his fractured family, he brings everyone together at Lizzie's childhood home on the oceanfront in South Carolina. Over the course of one summer, Jack and his children work to rebuild their lives and learn to become a family again after their loss.
