Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to accounts of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust that centre agency and defiance rather than victimhood alone.
  • You loved Defiance or similar films about guerrilla fighters and want the full historical context behind lesser-known WWII stories.
  • You appreciate meticulously researched history that illuminates overlooked corners of WWII, especially Eastern European resistance movements.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fiction over narrative non-fiction, or find dense historical detail exhausting rather than engaging.
  • You're seeking a gentler approach to Holocaust narratives and aren't ready for accounts centred on combat and revenge.
  • You have limited patience for stories about military strategy and tactical operations, which form the backbone of this account.

About this book

Partisan Song tells the previously untold story of Moshe Gildenman, a Jewish civil engineer and musician from Korets, Ukraine, who led a guerilla resistance movement against Nazi occupation during World War II. After Nazis murdered 2,200 Jews in his community, including his wife and daughter, Moshe escaped to the forest with his son, a nephew, and nine other Jews. Fighting under the alias Uncle Misha, he organized Uncle Misha's Jewish Group, a small brigade operating in northern Ukraine. Using only a revolver, five bullets, and a Yiddish songbook, Moshe devised intricate military missions. The group carried out more than 150 combat operations, including blowing up bridges and strategic targets. Moshe continued fighting until the war's end in Berlin. Written by James A. Grymes, author of the National Jewish Book Award-winning Violins of Hope, this account explores a lesser-known aspect of World War II, documenting Moshe's dedication to avenging his murdered family, liberating his homeland, and preserving his people's legacy through the bonds forged among his resistance fighters.
