Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Old Hollywood's seedier side and want the gossipy, uncensored version of how the industry actually worked.
  • You love reading about larger-than-life personalities who didn't fit the mould and how they left their mark anyway.
  • You enjoyed books about 70s excess and celebrity culture, especially stories that show both the allure and the cost of that era.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer sanitised, reverent accounts of Hollywood history that paint everyone in a flattering light.
  • You're looking for a straightforward Hollywood success story rather than a messy rise-and-fall narrative.
  • You're uncomfortable with frank discussions of drug use, sexual content, and industry cruelty told without softening.

About this book

Allan Carr was Hollywood's most prominent party-thrower during the 1970s, a decade marked by widespread cocaine use and sexual excess. He organized elaborate parties with names like the Mick Jagger/Cycle Sluts Party and themed movie premieres, including the Tommy/New York City subway opening. As an obese, caftan-wearing producer and outsider, Carr brought together movie stars and rock stars, gay and straight audiences, and Old and New Hollywood. As a producer, Carr's career alternated between major successes and significant failures. His hits included Grease and La Cage aux Folles, while his failures included the Village People's Can't Stop the Music. His most notorious project was the Academy Awards ceremony he produced, which featured Rob Lowe performing with Snow White—widely regarded as the worst Oscars broadcast ever. This disaster led to Carr becoming an outcast. Party Animals traces Carr's rise through excess and his subsequent fall, offering a candid behind-the-scenes account of Hollywood during its most infamous period.
