Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to multigenerational family sagas that explore what we inherit and what we choose to keep hidden.
  • You love historical fiction rooted in real events, particularly stories centred on displacement and the search for belonging.
  • You appreciate lyrical, character-driven narratives where objects (like the scroll) carry as much weight as dialogue.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven stories with constant momentum; this novel moves at a contemplative pace and dwells in emotional complexity.
  • You're looking for an uplifting or neat resolution; this book sits with ambiguity and the weight of impossible choices.
  • You want a primarily Chinese-American experience told from a contemporary perspective; much of the narrative unfolds in wartime China through memory.

About this book

Peach Blossom Spring follows three generations of a Chinese family across continents as they search for a place to call home. In 1938, as Japanese forces advance, Meilin and her four-year-old son Renshu flee their burning city. During their perilous journey across a war-transformed China, they find solace in a treasured hand scroll illustrated with ancient fables. Years later, Renshu has settled in America under the name Henry Dao. His daughter Lily wants to understand her heritage, but Henry refuses to discuss his childhood in China, uncertain how to share a story when so much has been left behind. The novel explores the haunting power of the past, the sacrifices parents make to protect their children, and one family's search for home across war, migration, and generations.
