Perfect for you if...

  • You've experienced poverty or hardship yourself and want to read about someone who made it through without minimising how brutally hard it was.
  • You work in education, social services, or youth support and need reminding why small acts of genuine care matter more than you think.
  • You appreciate unflinching, honest memoirs that don't dress things up but also don't wallow. This one has warmth alongside the hard truths.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a feel-good rags-to-riches narrative wrapped up neatly. This book is messier and more complex than that.
  • You prefer memoirs that focus purely on the triumph and skip over the survival years. Katriona spends real time in the difficult bits.
  • You want distance and detachment in your reading. This is raw and immediate, and it asks something of you.

About this book

Katriona O'Sullivan grew up bright and curious, but surrounded by poverty and chaos. At 15, she became pregnant and homeless, entering five years of survival. Today, she is an award-winning academic whose work examines barriers to education for girls in similar circumstances. O'Sullivan's path changed through mentors and supporters who truly saw her potential: teachers who helped her maintain hygiene and encouraged her to sit GCS Es, a community worker who guided her toward training schemes, and a friend who introduced her to Trinity College's access program while she worked as a cleaner. Poor combines O'Sullivan's personal testimony with reflection on poverty's complexities. Written with warmth and compassion—toward her parents, her younger self, and others—the book serves as both a personal account and an appeal for the future of vulnerable children.
