Q: A Novel

Shortly before his wedding, an unnamed man is visited by someone claiming to be his future self, who warns him not to marry Q, Quentina Elizabeth Deveril, the woman he loves. Initially skeptical, the protagonist eventually believes the warning and leaves his fiancée, creating an emptiness he cannot fill. Multiple future selves then appear in succession, each urging him to make different life choices: marry someone else, divorce, attend or leave law school, travel, join or quit a running club, study guitar, cello, Proust, Buddhism, or opera, and change his diet. Throughout these shifting directives, two things remain constant: his attachment to his New York City home and his love for Q. Evan Mandery's novel reimagines the traditional love story with an unexpected ending.
