About this book

River of Smoke is the second novel in the Ibis Trilogy. The Ibis, a former slave ship introduced in Sea of Poppies, finds itself in the Bay of Bengal during a deadly cyclone while carrying indentured servants toward Mauritius. The storm also threatens the Anahita, a clipper ship transporting a large opium consignment from India to Canton, and the Redruth, a nursery ship carrying horticulturists seeking Chinese botanical specimens. All three vessels converge in Canton's Fanqui-town, or Foreign Enclave, a location on the brink of the Opium Wars. The novel combines historical adventure with an examination of global commercial exploitation and its consequences.
