In 1907, Jewish immigrant Joel Russ arrived in New York City with a pushcart of herring, establishing a business that would span four generations. Russ & Daughters grew into a legendary New York destination for Jewish appetizing, with the original shop on the Lower East Side now joined by three additional locations throughout the city. Over one hundred years, the shop has served hundreds of thousands of customers, many of whom consider visits a family tradition or essential New York experience. This cookbook brings the institution into home kitchens for the first time, combining the store's history through family anecdotes and stories from staff and customers with guides to signature offerings including smoked salmon, sable, sturgeon, herring, and caviar. The book features more than 100 recipes for traditional foods such as latkes, matzo ball soup, babka, and bagels. While the book cannot replicate the experience of visiting the shop in person, it captures the spirit of Russ & Daughters and brings families and friends together around the table.
