About this book

Fred Waitzkin's memoir reflects on chess, competition, and childhood. Inspired by the Cold War–era match between Russian champion Boris Spassky and American superstar Bobby Fischer, Waitzkin fell in love with chess. Twelve years later, his own son Joshua discovered the game in Washington Square Park and began showing signs of prodigy-level talent. At age six, crowds gathered to watch him play, calling him a "Young Fischer." Within weeks of first sitting down at a chessboard, Joshua was playing with remarkable poise. Renowned coach Bruce Pandolfini discovered Joshua in the park and began refining his game. Waitzkin recounts his journey with his son from street chess in parks to the international grandmaster circuit. Bobby Fischer's mysterious disappearance from chess looms over their story, profoundly affecting both father and son. Joshua went on to win eight national championships before turning twenty. As they travel to Moscow to watch Kasparov challenge Karpov, Waitzkin grapples with difficult questions about his own motives: Is he pushing his son too hard? Is chess a joy to Joshua, or is the boy simply fulfilling his father's ambitions? The memoir explores the tension between loving family members and allowing them to forge their own paths.
