Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to military history that centres on individual leadership and unconventional tactics rather than big-picture strategy.
  • You want a biography of someone genuinely consequential: Blackburn literally shaped how America conducts covert operations today.
  • You appreciate narratives that span decades and multiple theatres, showing how one person's decisions ripple across history.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fiction or narrative that prioritises character introspection over action and strategic detail.
  • You're looking for a critical examination of special forces ethics or a book that questions the morality of covert operations.
  • You find military jargon and tactical descriptions tedious rather than compelling.

About this book

Shadow Commander tells the true story of US Army Captain Donald D. Blackburn, who refused surrender after the fall of Bataan in April 1942. Escaping to the jungles of North Luzon with Russell Volckmann, Blackburn organized 22,000 native fighters into guerrilla forces known as "Blackburn's Headhunters" against the Japanese, leading to the destruction of the enemy's naval base at Aparri. After the Pacific War, Blackburn played a key role in initiating Army Special Forces operations in Southeast Asia. He spearheaded Operation White Star in Laos as commander of the 77th Special Forces Group and took command of the classified Studies and Observations Group (SOG). In 1964, following the CIA's failed Leaping Lena program, Blackburn revitalized Special Operations in South Vietnam, sending reconnaissance teams into Cambodia and North Vietnam to discover Ho Chi Minh Trail networks and supply nodes. Authorized by General Westmoreland to conduct full-scale operations in Laos and Cambodia, Blackburn demonstrated mastery of insurgent tactics. He later architected Operation Ivory Coast (the Son Tay Prison Raid), the largest prisoner-of-war rescue mission and largest Army Special Forces operation of the Vietnam War. The book chronicles Blackburn's combat experiences and his role as a commander imparting lessons to Army Special Forces ranks.
