About this book

Set in a future America devastated by climate change, Ship Breaker follows Nailer, a teenage boy working in a crew that breaks down grounded oil tankers for parts on the flooded Gulf Coast. Nailer scavenges copper wiring to meet his quota and survive. When he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached after a hurricane, he faces a critical choice: strip the ship for profit or rescue its lone survivor, a wealthy girl who might offer him a better life. The novel explores conflicting loyalties in a world where oil is scarce and loyalty scarcer. It is set in the same universe as the companion novels The Drowned Cities and Tool of War. The book won the Michael L. Printz Award and was a National Book Award Finalist.
