Sister Mine

Nalo Hopkinson returns with a novel exploring the relationship between two sisters. Makeda and Abby are conjoined twins—Abby's head, torso, and left arm protruded from Makeda's chest. The crucial difference between them: Abby possesses magic, while Makeda does not. Daughters of a celestial demigod and a human woman, they were raised by their magical father, the god of growing things, in an unusual childhood that made them extremely close. Now adults, the sisters still share their childhood home. Surgery separated them years ago, leaving Abby with a permanent limp and Makeda feeling like she lacks something equally significant: magical ability. As Abby's talent developed into an unearthly singing voice, the sisters grew increasingly distant. Makeda decides to move out and build an independent life among nonmagical humans. She finds a space in Cheerful Rest, a run-down warehouse, where she hopes to live apart from Abby. The building has a resident band led by its charismatic superintendent. But when their father goes missing, Makeda must discover her own hidden talent and reconcile with Abby to save him.
