Perfect for you if...

  • You love Tudor and Plantagenet history but are tired of reading only about the men and kings who get all the attention.
  • You enjoy narrative history that brings obscure historical figures to life with the same care given to famous ones.
  • You're interested in how women navigated politics, marriage and survival during England's most violent civil conflict.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward academic history with footnotes and scholarly apparatus rather than narrative-driven storytelling.
  • You want a deep genealogical breakdown or heavily analysed primary sources rather than a readable account of these women's lives.
  • You have no interest in medieval English history or find the Wars of the Roses confusing and hard to follow.

About this book

Sisters of Richard III follows the lives of Anne, Elizabeth, and Margaret Plantagenet through one of England's most turbulent historical periods. As daughters of Richard, Duke of York and Cecily Neville, these three women were sisters to both Edward IV and Richard III. They witnessed their father's challenge to the English throne and his death, their brothers' conflicts over the crown, and the fall of the Plantagenet dynasty to Tudor rule. Yet the sisters were more than observers. Anne of York married the Lancastrian Duke of Exeter, who opposed her family, before remarrying for a second time. Elizabeth of York wed John de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, and bore eleven children who would later pose challenges to the Tudor kings. Margaret of York became Duchess of Burgundy and wielded considerable influence in her adopted kingdom while maintaining support for her English family. Though instrumental in shaping this turbulent era, these women have been largely overshadowed by their more prominent brothers. This book tells their story.
