Perfect for you if...

  • You love sprawling political thrillers that treat real-world tensions seriously and aren't afraid to pit ideologies against each other.
  • You've read the Natchez Burning trilogy and want to know what happens to Penn Cage after fifteen years of exile and loss.
  • You appreciate Southern Gothic settings where history, race, and power collide in ways that feel urgent and contemporary.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced standalone thrillers; this is the seventh book in a series and assumes you know the characters and their history.
  • You want a clear-cut villain and a tidy resolution; this book deals in moral ambiguity and systemic conflict.
  • You're looking for escapism; the political stakes here mirror actual American divisions and won't feel lightweight.

About this book

Fifteen years after the Natchez Burning trilogy, Penn Cage lives in isolation, having lost most of his loved ones and carrying a secret that separates him from the world. His exile ends when a mass shooting at a Mississippi rap festival nearly kills his daughter Annie, triggering panic in the towns of Natchez and Bienville. Antebellum plantation homes burn, and a Black radical group claims the attacks as historic acts of justice, pushing the region toward racial conflict. The violence intersects with the 2024 Presidential election when Robert E. Lee White, a Southern war hero and Special Forces veteran, emerges as a third-party candidate funded by an eccentric Mississippi billionaire. Dubbed "the Tik-Tok Man," White pursues an unprecedented presidential run reminiscent of H. Ross Perot's campaign. As White prepares to declare his candidacy, Penn teams with his daughter, now a civil rights lawyer, and a former Black Panther from Parchman Prison to uncover a political conspiracy behind White's presidential ambitions. Penn works to expose the conspiracy's motivations before racial and political polarization pushes America toward a second Civil War.
