Perfect for you if...

  • You want to understand why racism persists in America beyond surface-level explanations, and you're willing to sit with uncomfortable truths about the nation's founding intellects.
  • You're a student of American history who's tired of sanitised textbooks and want the full, complicated record of how discriminatory policies created the ideologies that justified them.
  • You care about recognising racist thinking in modern form, and you need a historical foundation to spot how old ideas get repackaged as something new.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a quick read or a primer on racism. This is 599 pages of dense, rigorous scholarship that demands your full attention.
  • You prefer stories that feel hopeful or redemptive throughout. This book excavates centuries of harm and asks you to sit with that darkness before offering any light.
  • You're seeking a book that blames ignorance or hatred for racism. Kendi argues the opposite: that racist ideas were deliberately constructed and spread by intelligent people with material interests.

About this book

Stamped from the Beginning is a history of how racist ideas were created, spread, and became deeply rooted in American society. Ibram X. Kendi argues that racist thought remains alive in America, more sophisticated and insidious than ever, with a long history implicating nearly every major American thinker. Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas throughout American history, using the life stories of five major American intellectuals to structure the narrative: Puritan minister Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and activist Angela Davis. He demonstrates that racist ideas were not born from ignorance or hatred, but were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation's racial inequities. By examining this history, the book offers tools for exposing racist thinking. The work won the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction and was named a New York Times Bestseller and Washington Post Bestseller.
